We dig for thethings you missed.
Amazon has half a billion products. Most lists you read recycle the same fifty. We're here for the other 499,999,950.
The discovery problem
Search for “best mattress topper” and you'll find a hundred articles recommending the same three brands. They're fine products. They're also the products with the biggest marketing budgets and the highest affiliate payouts.
Meanwhile, somewhere on page 8 of Amazon's search results, a small workshop in Oregon is making the best ceramic knife sharpener nobody has heard of. A specialty brand in Vermont sells a $40 thermos that outperforms the $80 one in every spec. A category that everyone ignores has three quietly excellent options.
That's the work we do. We surface the products that mainstream review sites overlook because they don't fit a sponsorship deal, don't move enough volume to be a headline pick, or simply haven't been discovered yet.
How we choose
Three filters, in this order:
- Does it earn its place? No product gets a slot just because it sells well. We look at real reviews, expert opinions, product specs, and where possible, hands-on use. If we wouldn't recommend it to a friend, it's out.
- Is it overlooked?Products that already dominate the search results don't need our help. We prioritize the lesser-known picks that deserve more attention.
- Is it still worth it today?Prices change. Stock vanishes. Companies get acquired and quality drops. We refresh our recommendations regularly and remove what no longer holds up.
How we make money
When you click a link on this site and buy something on Amazon, we earn a small commission. The price you pay never changes. This is how we keep the lights on and the editorial work independent.
We do not accept payment from brands. We do not run sponsored posts. No company can pay to be featured, ranked higher, or reviewed more favorably. If that ever changes, we'll say so loudly and clearly on every affected page.
Read our full affiliate disclosure for the legal version.
When we update
Our product data refreshes automatically. Prices, availability, and ratings stay current. If something looks off — a stale price, a broken link, a product that's no longer worth recommending — tell us. We act on every report.
Who we are
Purpose of Shopping is run by a small editorial team that prefers to stay behind the work. We're not influencers, we're not celebrities, and we're not selling our personalities. We're people who think hard about products and want to share what we find.
If you have a question, a tip, or want to suggest a product we should look at, get in touch.
